The Northeast Zone of India is also known as the land of seven sisters. These seven sisters are the Indian states in this region. Assam, Sikkim, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh form the northeast zone of India. Full of natural beauty anytime is good to visit northeast. However, during the monsoon, one should especially visit Shillong and Cherrapunji. 

Shillong – Meghalaya

Shillong is one of the Indian cities to receive the heaviest rainfall. Mesmerizing Khasi and Jayanti hills surround the city, making it greener during the monsoon. Shillong is also one of the best places to visit in August in India with family.

If you prefer air travel, the nearest airport from Shillong is the Umroi Airport at a distance of about 30 kilometers. It is also known as Shillong airport and offers domestic travel facilities connecting some of the Indian cities.

A better option is landing at Guwahati international airport, which is about 125 kilometers away from the city. This airport offers better connectivity with Indian cities and abroad. 

Cherrapunji – Meghalaya

Cherrapunji is famous for its living root bridges and scenic nature trails. Monsoon is the best time to visit this place as the beauty of nature is impeccable at this time.

The nearest airport from Cherrapunji is located at Guwahati, Assam. It is at a distance of about 180 kilometers. You can book an intercity cab from Guwahati airport to Cherrapunji.

Similarly, if you wish to travel by train, reach Guwahati railway station and then take a taxi to Cherrapunji.

Pro tip: Keep all your belongings in a waterproof bag during monsoon. It is also a good idea to put silica gel in your gadgets/electronics bag for additional moisture protection.
