History of Kollam<\/span><\/h2>\n

The city of Kollam was formerly known as Quilon. During the 13th and 14th century, Kollam was one of the four entrepots for India\u2019s trade with the outside world.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Portuguese were the first Europeans to establish a trading center in Kollam in 1502 for pepper merchandise. But, this is not where the natives lost their control over the place. Kollam has witnessed a frequent change of reigns. <\/span><\/p>\n

After Portuguese, in 1661, the <\/span>Dutch East India Company<\/span><\/i> took the possession of the city. In the 18th century, <\/span>Travancore<\/span><\/i> conquered Kollam. By 1795, the control of the city went into the hands of the British.<\/span><\/p>\n

The battle of Quilon:<\/b> An important milestone in the history of the city is the battle of Quilon, fought between Travancore and <\/span>British East India company<\/span><\/a> in 1809. This is when the city was completely occupied by the British and the next significant event is India\u2019s struggle for freedom itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kollam Culture<\/span><\/h2>\n

The majority of the population in Kollam is Hindu. Hence, one can find a number of Hindu temples in the city. The best about this city is the ancient temples and structures are preserved. For example, <\/span>Anandavalleswaram Sri Mahadevar Temple<\/b> is a popular Hindu temple in the city and is about 400 years old.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another significant part of the population in Kollam comprises Christians. You will be amazed to know that the <\/span>Roman Catholic Diocese of Quilon<\/b> is the first Catholic diocese in India. Diocese is a district under the pastoral care of a bishop in the Christian Church.<\/span><\/p>\n
