It is situated on the banks of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tawi_River\" rel=\"NOFOLLOW\">Tawi River<\/a>. It has an average elevation of 327\u00a0m (1,073\u00a0ft). <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gozocabs.com\/delhi-jammu\">Jammu city<\/a> lies at uneven ridges of low heights at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shivalik_hills\" rel=\"NOFOLLOW\">Shivalik hills<\/a>. It is surrounded by Shivalik range to the north, east and southeast while the Trikuta Range surrounds it in the north-west. It is approximately 600 kilometres (370\u00a0mi) from the national capital,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gozocabs.com\/delhi-jammu\">New Delhi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gozocabs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/jam1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1602\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gozocabs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/jam1.jpg?resize=1024%2C768\" alt=\"jam1\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gozocabs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/jam1.jpg?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gozocabs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/jam1.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gozocabs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/jam1.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many historians and locals believe that Jammu was founded by Raja Jambu Lochan in the 14th century BC. During one of his hunting campaigns, he reached the Tawi River where he saw a goat and a lion drinking water at the same place. Having satisfied their thirst, the animals went their own ways. The Raja was amazed, abandoned the idea of hunting and returned to his companions. Recounting what he had seen, he exclaimed that this place, where a lion and a goat could drink water side by side, was a place of peace and tranquility. The Raja commanded that a palace be built at this place and a city was founded around it. This city became known as Jambu-Nagar, which then later changed into Jammu.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Bahu Fort\u00a0is located in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gozocabs.com\/delhi-jammu\">Jammu city<\/a>. The fort, said to be built by an earlier ruler, was refurbished during the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sikh_Empire\" rel=\"NOFOLLOW\">Sikh Empire<\/a>\u00a0by Raja\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gulab_Singh\" rel=\"NOFOLLOW\">Gulab Singh<\/a>\u00a0in the 19th century.\u00a0The fort is a religious place, and within its precincts has a temple dedicated to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hinduism\" rel=\"NOFOLLOW\">Hindu<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Goddess\" rel=\"NOFOLLOW\">goddess<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kali\" rel=\"NOFOLLOW\">Kali<\/a>, the presiding deity of Jammu. The temple is known locally as the &#8220;Bave Kali Mata temple&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gozocabs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/jam2.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1603\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gozocabs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/jam2.jpg?resize=700%2C410\" alt=\"jam2\" width=\"700\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gozocabs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/jam2.jpg?w=700&amp;ssl=1 700w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gozocabs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/jam2.jpg?resize=300%2C176&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>One can reach this magnificent fort through many ways. The nearest airport to Bahu Fort is the Jammu Airport, which is 5 kms away from Bahu Fort. The nearest railway station to Bahu Fort is the Jammu Tawi Train Station which is 2 kms away from Bahu Fort. Being on the hilly side it is not that convinient to travel via roads. However, on the left banks of the river Tawi the Bahu Fort stands quiet prominently and can be seen from quite a distance and hence is easy to spot in the region.<\/p>\n<p>A popular Hindu festival known as &#8220;Bahu Mela&#8221; is held during the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Navaratra\" rel=\"NOFOLLOW\">Navaratras<\/a>\u00a0in the fort area, twice a year, during March-April and September-October. This attracts a very large number of pilgrims to the fort and the temple located within it. Every week, Tuesday and Sunday are special days of worship at the temple. During the main festival time, special stalls are opened near the fort area and one can buy paraphernalia such as sweets, flowers, incense, coconuts, red cloth and so forth, to make special offerings to the deity in the temple.<\/p>\n<p>Mubarak Mandi\u00a0is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palace\" rel=\"NOFOLLOW\">palace<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jammu\" rel=\"NOFOLLOW\">Jammu<\/a>. The palace was the royal residence of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maharaja\" rel=\"NOFOLLOW\">Maharaja<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jammu_and_Kashmir\" rel=\"NOFOLLOW\">Jammu and Kashmir<\/a>\u00a0from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dogra_dynasty\" rel=\"NOFOLLOW\">Dogra dynasty<\/a>. It was their main seat till 1925 when Maharadja\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hari_Singh\" rel=\"NOFOLLOW\">Hari Singh<\/a>\u00a0moved to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hari_Niwas_Palace\" rel=\"NOFOLLOW\">Hari Niwas Palace<\/a>\u00a0in the northern part of Jammu. The palace is located in the heart of the old walled city of Jammu and overlooks the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tawi_River\" rel=\"NOFOLLOW\">Tawi<\/a>\u00a0River. Exemplary art and architecture of this palace makes it a speaking landmark of Kashmir. This palace is unique because it\u2019s characterized by European, Mughal and Rajasthani style of architecture. The phenomenal look of this palace stuns tourists. Majestic halls and galleries of the palace are used for ceremonies and functions. Passing by this Dogra heritage tourists get the fragrance of royalty spread in the air of Jammu.<\/p>\n<p>Amar Mahal Palace Museum was the place where Raja Amar Singh lived earlier. It is situated on the right bank of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tawi_River\" rel=\"NOFOLLOW\">Tawi River<\/a>. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sivalik_Hills\" rel=\"NOFOLLOW\">Sivalik Hills<\/a>\u00a0or ranges to the north of the Mahal, on the left bank of the river, provide a grand view, with the Tawi River flowing in between, draining the valley. It is well located adjoining the heritage hotel known as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hari_Niwas_Palace\" rel=\"NOFOLLOW\">Hari Niwas Palace<\/a>\u00a0Hotel, in the heart of the city, on the road to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kashmir\" rel=\"NOFOLLOW\">Kashmir<\/a>. The palace is really beautiful which is made up of red stand stone which stands apart from the other picturesque sites. It is characterised by its vast array of dishes cooked over a long period of time in exotic spices. The seasons and availability of fresh produce dictates the ingredients, some of which are dried and used in the winter months. The Dogra dishes include\u00a0Aloo Dum, Rajma, Kashmiri Pulao\u00a0as well as the staple\u00a0Naan. Jammu has an airport which though desperately needs modernization still has many flights from Delhi, Srinagar and Leh. Jammu is well connected by train to points south and east. Jammu Tawi is an important railhead of the Norther Railways serving the Jammu and Kashmir State. It is the second last major rail stop heading north. To\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wikitravel.org\/en\/Srinagar\" rel=\"NOFOLLOW\">Srinagar<\/a>\u00a0there are several J&amp;K SRTC buses. Sumo jeep taxis also do this trip. Minibuses also run from outside Jammu bus stand and are more comfortable and sometimes cheaper than Sumos.
