jagannath temple

You will be amazed to know that it took three generations time to build the famous Jagannath temple of Puri, Odisha. The Jagannath temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, an avatar of Lord Krishna. The deity is accompanied by Goddess Subhadra and Lord Balbhadra.

Jagannath temple Jargon: The flag on the top of the main temple flies in the direction opposite to the wind, defying the law of nature.

The History of the Jagannath temple architecture

Studies reveal that the construction of the Jagannath temple was initiated by the Kalinga ruler- Anantavarman Chodaganga. He built the Jagamohan and Vimana portions of the temple during his reign from 1078 to 1148 CE.

During 1174 CE, the ruler of Odisha- Ananga Bhima Deva completed the temple and gave it the shape it holds today.

There are four distinct sections of the temple-

  1. The Vimana or Garbha Griha – The main temples where the deities are seated.
  2. The Mukhathala – Front porch area.
  3. The Natya Mandap – It is the Lord’s recreation hall.
  4. The Bhoga Mandap – It is the offerings hall where people eat the prasada.

Jagannath temple Jargon: The temple lays no shadow on the ground.

The Rath Yatra Festival at Puri

In the month of Ashadh (rainy season), usually during June or July Lord Jagannath’s procession is taken out along with his companions- Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra. The chariot is pulled by people, tied to huge ropes and people feel their privilege in getting an opportunity to pull Lord’s chariot.

The route followed is from Jagannath temple to Gundicha temple.
